Milenge, June 18, 2019, ZANIS --- Milenge District Commissioner Kunda Chibilo has warned farmers in the district against the illegal smuggling of maize into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mr Chibilo says government will not take kindly to farmers who are in the habit of smuggling maize.

ZANIS reports that Mr Chibilo said this during the District Agriculture and Commercial Show in Milenge held under the theme "Embracing Industrial Development."

Mr Chibilo called on farmers in the district to diversify in their agriculture saying the district cannot talk about industrial development in the agriculture sector without talking about crop diversification.

The District Commissioner has since called on farmers under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) to start verifying their particulars with their camp officers in preparation for the coming farming season

He said government is set to start distributing  inputs for the 2019/2020  farming season early  hence farmers need to prepare early.

Earlier, District Show Society Chairperson Melchizedek Mumba encouraged farmers to engage in off season agricultural activities.

Mr Mumba said Milenge is surrounded by the Luapula River with a lot of water, which farmers can take advantage of and venture into off season farming like gardening.
