Solwezi , October 23,  2019 ZANIS--   Solwezi mayor Nicholas Mukumbi says Solwezi municipal council has purchased a tractor and trailer at a cost of K335,360 to enhance garbage collection in the district.

Mr Mukumbi stated that the tractor will supplement the collection of garbage by other trucks owned by the local authority.

ZANIS reports that Mr Mukumb saying in an interview yesterday that the purchase of the tractor is part of the implementation of the keep Zambia clean, green and healthy campaign.

The local authority has since zoned Solwezi into four garbage collection zones and four companies have been contracted to collect garbage in these areas, he said.

“The council has also placed rubbish bins across the central business district of Solwezi to enable the public to dispose of garbage in the right manner, “disclosed the mayor.

Meanwhile, Solwezi municipal council assistant public relations manager, Esther Chirwa has urged people in the area to make cleaning their surroundings a habit.

Ms Chirwa said despite the local authority being mandated to clean the area, people should not wait for council workers to clean their surroundings.

“Residents in the area should utilise the bins which the council has placed in the central business district and avoid littering drainages, “she said.

And a trader at Solwezi's Mitech market, Royda Samuyo has commended the local authority for purchasing the vehicle adding that the gesture will improve the collection of garbage at the market.

Ms Samuyo urged her fellow traders in all trading places to throw garbage in bins and keep the food they sell clean at all times to prevent diseases such as cholera.
