Kalomo, June 18, 2019, ZANIS---- The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) committee in Kalomo district in Southern province has started distributing relief food to hunger affected area.

DMMU District Chairperson, Doreen Hadunka witnessed the sending off and the first distribution consignment to 500 beneficiaries at Tara basic school in chief Siachitema’s area yesterday, Sunday.

Mrs Hadunka, who is also acting Kalomo District Commissioner, urged people not to politicize the relief food saying it is a government’s programme to alleviate the effects of poor yields as a result from the drought spells which the area experienced during the 2018-19 farming season.

The distribution exercise is being conducted by the Organization for Relief and Development (OFRAD) with recipients receiving a 25 kilogrammes bag of mealie-meal.

OFRAD National Director, Oscar Chinyema said 20 per cent of the relief food would be for the extremely vulnerable while 80 per cent is food for work.

And some beneficiaries talked to by ZANIS thanked government for responding to their cries on time.

Beatrice Sikumbali says it is gratifying that government has shown the gesture of assisting the hunger stricken people without looking at their political affiliations.

Nine camps under the four agriculture blocks of Kalomo have been targeted where 4,000 beneficiaries are to be assisted in the 125 metric tonnes allocated to the district.

The camps to benefit include Sipatunyana, Dimbwe, Siabunkululu, Chilala, Kalonda, Tara, Nantale, Simakakata and Bbilili.

President Edgar Lungu last month flagged off relief food distribution to the hunger affected in Southern province when he officiated at a field day co-organized by PANNAR Seed and the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) at Mr. Raymond Mufwambi’s farm in chief Siachitema’s area.
