Mwinilunga, November 9, 2019, ZANIS ----   Chief Chibwika Kutona of the Lunda speaking people in Mwinilunga district has advised his subjects not to abandon agriculture following the discovery of gold in Kasenseli area.

Noting his disappointment with the development, the traditional ruler said he is concerned that agriculture activities in his Chiefdom have stalled as most his subjects have opted to go and search for the precious mineral.

ZANIS reports that the Traditional Leader said in an interview in Mwinilunga today that as farming has been a traditional way of life in his Chiefdom, his subjects must continue practicing and safeguarding and not be abandoned.

Chief Chibwika Kutona said government has shown commitment to support farmers with inputs under the farmer Input Support Program (FISP) adding that these inputs must be put to good use.

He also said he has received disturbing reports that some farmers are planning to sale the fertilizer acquired under FISP because they have resorted to abandon farming this season.

“Instead going for gold rush, I therefore urge my subjects in the chiefdom to be on the lookout and report the culprits, “he said.

And speaking in a separate interview District Agriculture Coordinator Bwalya Ponga said farmers have started collecting their farm input under direct Input Supply through Nyimba investments and Mwinilunga District farmers Cooperatives Union.

Mr Ponga said 6,485 farmers have been issued with authority to collect Inputs of which 1,818 have redeemed so far with the district target of 8,338 famers who have deposited their money.

Government has delivered all the farm inputs which include 8,000 by 50 kilogramme bags of D-compound and 7,900 by 50 kilogramme bags of urea fertilizer and 2,000 by 10 kilogramme bags of maize seed target for the district.
