Sioma, September 27, 2019, ZANIS—Government has launched a general management plan for Sioma Ngwezi National Park to enhance diverse wildlife conservation in Western Province.

Minister of Tourism and Arts, Ronald Chitotela expressed optimism that the plan will facilitate for easy identification of potential game management crisis such as unplanned settlements and deforestation which are on the increase in the park.

Mr Chitotela pointed out that once the general strategic management plan is implemented, it will contribute positively to the development of tourism sector which would translate into job creation for the local people in the district.

The Minister said this in a speech read for him by his Permanent Secretary, Amos Malupenga during the lunch of the management plan in Sioma District.

Speaking at the same function, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Country Director, Nachilala Nkombo said the plan will help the park reconstitute its preservative ability in sustaining various species in the park for socio–economic benefits.

Mrs Nkombo further implored Sioma residents to take advantage of the plan and protect natural resources that are at the verge of extinction in the region.

And Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) representative Induna Nyamawina pledged to work with government in the conservation of natural resources.

The Induna noted that government was making strides in the management of natural resources but stated that it is also the duty of traditional leaders who are the custodian of the land, to play a major role in the preservation of ecological environment.

The traditional leader encouraged the community in Sioma to uphold to the best environmental conservation practices that would reduce ecological degradation in the area.

Meanwhile, Sioma District Commissioner, Maurice Litula has bemoaned the increased cases of animal human conflict in the vicinity of Sioma Ngwezi National Park.

Mr Litula disclosed that two weeks ago two people were attacked in a separate incidences by stray elephants from Sioma Ngwezi National Park.
